Zakynthos Town, Zakynthos

Zakynthos Town (Zante Town) curves around the island's eastern harbour, rebuilt in its Venetian-influenced style after the 1953 earthquake. Its landmarks are the tall bell tower of Agios Dionysios, the church of the island's patron saint, and the arcaded squares of Solomos and Agiou Markou behind the waterfront. It's the transport hub — ferries to Kyllini on the mainland leave from here, and buses fan out across the island — and a pleasant place to wander in the evening for the seafront tavernas and cafés. The Venetian castle and Bochali hill rise just above for the view.

Getting there: The island's main port and bus hub on the east coast; ferries to Kyllini (mainland).

Tip: Worth an evening for the waterfront and Agios Dionysios. Buses to the resorts leave from here.
