Turtle Spotting & Marathonisi
Things to do · Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece
Laganas Bay is one of the Mediterranean's most important nesting grounds for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), protected as the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. Boat trips head out from Laganas, Keri and Agios Sostis to look for turtles feeding and surfacing in the shallow, warm water, usually pausing at the uninhabited islet of Marathonisi — 'Turtle Island' — for a swim off its pale beach. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance and doesn't chase or crowd the animals; sightings are wild and never guaranteed, but common in season. The turtles also nest on the bay's beaches, which close to visitors at night to protect them.
Getting there: Turtle-spotting boats leave from Laganas, Keri and Agios Sostis harbours.
Tip: Pick a licensed operator that keeps its distance. Never touch or chase the turtles; keep off nesting beaches at night.
