Agios Nikolaos Port, Zakynthos

Agios Nikolaos is a small working harbour on the north-east coast, the main jumping-off point for boat trips to the Blue Caves and around to Navagio. It's also where the seasonal car ferry to Pesada on Kefalonia docks, making it a useful link if you're island-hopping. Around the port are tavernas, a pebble beach and watersports; the village of Volimes above is known for its weavers and honey stalls. If you're basing yourself in the north (Alykes, Makris Gialos) for the caves and quieter beaches, this is your harbour.

Getting there: North-east coast beyond Alykes; boat trips and the seasonal Kefalonia ferry leave here.

Tip: Handiest port for the Blue Caves. Seasonal ferry from here to Kefalonia for island-hopping.
