The Blue Caves

At Cape Skinari, the northern tip of Zakynthos, the coast breaks into a run of sea caves, arches and grottoes where sunlight bouncing off the white rock and sandy seabed turns the water an intense, luminous blue. Small boats nose right inside the arches and stop for a swim in the glowing water. Trips leave from Agios Nikolaos and the little harbour below Skinari, and are very often sold as a combined Blue Caves and Navagio day out. The colour is at its most vivid in the morning sun; a smaller boat gets you deeper into the caves than the big cruisers.
Getting there: By small boat from Agios Nikolaos port or the Skinari harbour, often combined with Navagio.
Tip: Morning light makes the blue strongest. A smaller boat reaches further into the caves than the big ones.
