Xigia Beach, Zakynthos

Xigia is a small pebble-and-sand cove tucked under pine-topped cliffs on the north-east coast, fed by natural sulphur and collagen springs that give the water a milky tint, a faint eggy scent and a reputation as a natural spa. The spring water runs noticeably cooler than the surrounding sea, which is bracing on a hot day, and locals swear by it for the skin. It's a compact beach with a couple of small bars and limited parking, so it fills quickly in peak season — come earlier in the day. A scenic stop if you're touring the north.

Getting there: On the coast road north of Alykes; small car park above the beach.

Tip: The sulphur springs run cold and the beach is small — arrive early for a spot and parking.
