Gerakas Beach, Zakynthos

Gerakas is many people's favourite Zakynthos beach: a long sweep of fine golden sand backed by crumbling ochre cliffs at the end of the green Vasilikos peninsula. Because it's one of the most important loggerhead nesting beaches in the marine park, it's carefully protected — the back of the beach is roped off, and it closes to visitors from dusk through the night in nesting season, with no development right on the sand. That protection is exactly why it stays so beautiful and low-key. There's a small visitor centre about the turtles at the top of the access path.

Getting there: At the tip of the Vasilikos peninsula, south-east of Zakynthos Town; car or local bus.

Tip: Closes at dusk in nesting season and stays undeveloped. Go by day; keep behind the roped nesting zone.
