Laganas Beach, Zakynthos

Laganas is a broad ribbon of soft sand stretching for kilometres along the southern bay, shelving gently into warm, shallow water that suits families and weak swimmers. It fronts the island's liveliest resort, so the central stretch is packed with sunbeds, bars and watersports in season; walk east or west and it thins out. The whole bay is part of the turtle marine park, so some sections and the quieter eastern beaches have restrictions to protect nesting — signs mark them. Sunsets over the bay, with Marathonisi islet offshore, are the beach's quieter pleasure.

Getting there: Fronting Laganas resort, a short drive or bus from Zakynthos Town and the airport.

Tip: The central strip is busy and lively; walk along for calmer sand. Respect the marked turtle-protection zones.
