Porto Limnionas, Zakynthos

Porto Limnionas is a narrow, rocky inlet on the west coast where cliffs drop into deep, astonishingly clear water — a swimming and snorkelling spot rather than a sandy beach. You climb down over the rocks or jump straight in, and a taverna on the headland serves lunch with a view over the fjord-like cove. It's a favourite escape from the busy southern beaches, especially in the afternoon when the west-coast light is at its best. Bring water shoes for the rocks, and note there's no sand and little shade.

Getting there: West coast below Agios Leon village; reached by a winding drive, best with a car.

Tip: Deep, clear water off the rocks — bring water shoes. Lovely in the afternoon light.
