Vasilikos Peninsula, Zakynthos

The Vasilikos peninsula, reaching south-east from Zakynthos Town, is the island's quieter, greener corner — olive groves and low hills threaded by a single road, ending at the protected turtle beaches of Gerakas and Dafni. Accommodation here leans towards smaller hotels, studios and villas rather than the big resort blocks of Laganas, and it draws couples, families and returning visitors who want the beaches without the strip. You'll want a car: the beaches (Banana, Gerakas, Agios Nikolaos) are spread along the peninsula, and Zakynthos Town's tavernas and the marine-park boat trips are a short drive away.

Getting there: South-east of Zakynthos Town; a car is the easiest way around the peninsula.

Tip: The pick for a quieter, greener stay near the best turtle beaches — but hire a car.
