Bochali & the Venetian Castle, Zakynthos

Bochali is the leafy hill immediately above Zakynthos Town, an easy drive or a stiff walk up from the waterfront. From its little square, with a couple of cafés, you look out over the whole town, the harbour and the sweep of the bay — especially good at dusk when the lights come on. A little higher, the ruined Venetian castle (Kastro) sits inside pine woods on the site of the ancient acropolis; there's a small entrance fee, quiet shaded paths among the walls, and wider views from the top. A nice half-hour escape from the seafront.

Getting there: On the hill directly above Zakynthos Town; short drive or a steep walk up.

Tip: Great at dusk over the town lights. The Venetian castle just above has shaded walls and wider views.
